Tooth Extractions in Irvine CA

When Tooth Removal is the Best Option

Tooth pain, infection, or damage can disrupt daily life. If a tooth is severely decayed, fractured beyond repair, or affected by advanced gum disease, Nova Dental Studio offers simple tooth extraction procedures to relieve pain and protect your oral health.

A “simple” extraction means the tooth is visible, not impacted, and can be removed without complex surgery. It’s a common dental procedure, and when done properly, can be quick, safe, and comfortable.

Why You Might Need a Simple Extraction

Here are common reasons people may need a tooth removed:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection that can’t be treated with a root canal

  • Fractured or cracked teeth beyond repair

  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease causing loosening of the tooth

  • Baby teeth failing to fall out and blocking adult teeth

  • Overcrowding or preparing for orthodontic treatment

  • Extra teeth or malformed teeth

  • Pain, swelling, or risk of spreading infection

At Nova Dental Studio, we evaluate each case carefully to ensure extraction is the right choice and no alternative can save the tooth.

What Happens During the Extraction Procedure

01
Comprehensive Exam & X-Rays

We take digital X-rays to see the tooth’s position, roots, surrounding bone, and any potential complications. This helps us plan the safest extraction.

02
Local Anesthesia

Before anything begins, we numb the area so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. If you’re anxious, we can discuss ways to help you relax.

03
Loosening the Tooth

Using tools (often an elevator), we gently loosen the tooth from its socket by breaking down the periodontal ligaments and soft tissue attachments.

04

Removal

Once sufficiently loosened, forceps are used to grip the tooth and gently remove it.

05
After-Extraction Care

  • Socket cleaning and checking for roots

  • Gauze placed to control bleeding
  • If necessary, stitches are placed to close the wound

06
Recovery Instructions

You’ll get guidance on pain control, how to manage swelling, eating soft foods, maintaining hygiene, and when to contact us if there are concerns.

Is a Simple Extraction Right for You?

You may be a good candidate if:

  • The tooth is visible in the mouth and not impacted near nerves or sinuses

  • Tooth roots are well-defined on X-rays

  • Good overall health, no uncontrolled medical conditions preventing anesthesia

If the tooth is impacted, severely damaged below the gum line, near sensitive anatomical structures, or risk for complications is higher — a “surgical extraction” (or referral to an oral surgeon) might be required. Dr. Li will help you understand which type of extraction best fits your situation.

Recovery & Aftercare: What to Expect

Proper care after extraction is crucial. Here’s how to ensure smooth healing:

  • Bite gently on gauze to prevent excessive bleeding; gauze is usually changed after a short time.

  • Keep your head elevated for the first 24 hours.

  • Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling (for 15-20 minutes on/off).

  • Avoid strenuous activity for a day or two.

  • Eat soft foods: soups, mashed potatoes, smoothies. Avoid hard/crunchy foods until healing progresses.

  • Do NOT use straws, smoke, or spit forcefully — these can dislodge the blood clot and cause painful “dry socket.”

  • Maintain oral hygiene gently: soft brushing around the area, salt water rinses as recommended.

Healing typically takes a few days to a week for soft tissue; full bone healing may take several weeks. Pain and swelling should diminish within 48-72 hours, but call us if you have severe pain, prolonged bleeding, or signs of infection (fever, unusual discharge).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Will the extraction hurt?

With modern anesthesia and pain management, most patients feel little to no pain during the procedure. You may feel pressure, but discomfort afterwards can be managed with recommended pain medication

  • How much does an extraction cost?

Costs vary based on tooth position, complexity, anesthesia, and whether extraction is simple or surgical. We provide a transparent estimate during consultation and can help with insurance or payment plans.

  • How long until I can eat normally again?

You’ll want to stick with soft foods for a few days. Usually within a week, you can begin reintroducing harder foods as comfort allows.

  • Aftercare and healing - when will it feel “normal”?

Most patients heal enough in 1–2 weeks for daily routines, though full healing of bone may take a few more weeks.

  • What if I have missing teeth and want to replace them later?

Extracting a tooth sometimes sets up a plan for replacement via dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures. Preserving bone and tissue during extraction helps make replacement smoother and more successful.

Complexity Lower, less invasive Higher; may require incision, bone removal
Anesthesia / sedation Local anesthetic typical May require sedation or general anesthesia
Recovery time Faster, less swelling Longer healing, more discomfort
Cost Generally lower Higher due to complexity
